When I think of enormous Christmas trees, the one that always comes to mind is the beautiful tree that adorns Rockefeller Center in New York City. But that tree has nothing on the Christmas tree in Umbria, Italy, which the Guinness Book of World Records has recognized as the biggest Christmas tree in the world. The tree is made up of colored lights and was built over the slopes of Monte Ingino in Umbria with a star at the top where the Basilica of Sant’Ubaldo, parton saint of Gubbio, is located.
The Umbria Christmas tree is 750 meters high and features 250 green lights (the outline of the tree), 300 multicolored lights within, and a star at the top that is 1,000 meters wide. When lit, this amazing tree can be seen more than 30 miles away. It is turned on every year on December 7 with a specially invited guest asked to flip the switch. In 2014, Pope Francis got the honor of turning on the Umbria tree to kick off their holiday season.
